Who are the best players to buy for FPL GW4?

It's a week with some unbelievable fixtures to specifically target so let's break it all down nice and simple by position, and look at the best team for next week. If you're wildcarding this week there's a lot to think about and teams worth doubling and tripling up on.

🧤 Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers first and Arsenal have finally conceded, it took all of 80ish seconds vs Chelsea but a smash and grab goal, over the entire game vs Chelsea Arsenal only conceded 0.39 which is just ridiculous honestly given the strength of this Chelsea team that are going to be scoring a significant amount of goals this year.

It's almost laughable how good Arsenal's defence is, 0.93 xGC after 3 games, those are the sort of numbers that is good in one game not 3. So do you go triple defence or double defence and a mid? Right now you really can't say which is better, Raya, Calafiori, Konsa, Gabriel are all fantastic but Saka and Odegaard are looking fantastic too.

For xGC Man City are second best in the league over the opening 3 gameweeks, then it's Forest, Brentford, Sunderland, Man Utd, Leeds and Liverpool.

So Raya facing Sunderland is the top keeper this week on 4.4 points, then Martinez vs Hull, then it's Alisson, Suzuko, Verbruggen, Kinsky, Henderson and Trafford.

Chelsea home to Hull one of the stand out fixtures this week but Martinez could be a waste of a Chelsea slot when you've got Rogers, Palmer, Joao Pedro with a significantly higher ceiling, but he's not bad and the clean sheet odds are very good. 46%, Arsenal top on 48% currently.

Looking at the next 5 gameweek projections Raya leads in that respect and it is Martinez second, Verbruggen and Kinsky worth a mention tied for the next 5 gameweeks so they can still represent good points per million value at 4.5m with 1 clean sheet each in the opening 3 gameweeks.

🛡️ Defenders

Defenders next and a couple Arsenal players here, Gabriel and Konsa. The only reason Calafiori isn't is because on FPL Review his expected minutes are a little lower to account for early substitutions and if there is some game in the next 5 he doesn't start, which brings his average minutes down. He's been unbelievable though so he could just keep starting and starting. We'll have to see what impact Europe has to all the teams involved.

As a reminder there's a significant amount of teams playing midweek before GW4:

Early transfers always carry a little risk when there's that much action, so don't go early unless getting ahead of a price change is important to you. If there's no price changes happening on the players concerned there's no reason to go early.

So De Cuyper is set to rise tonight, and he's third top defender this week! Is he worth a buy? Coventry away is very nice, then it's Arsenal where you bench, after that it's the 3 week international break and we don't know when Mitoma will play other than after that break, it's very unlikely he's thrown straight in to the starting 11 so you may get GW4 and GW6 with him out of position LW in your team. Or maybe you're looking at a GW6 wildcard anyway and need a nice defender for this week, he's the one.

Vuskovic is the long term pick for 0.3m more, scored last game - in the pre-season content we were talking about how good his goalscoring record is for a CB, last season he scored 6 goals in 28 league games, the year before 7 in 28. Ridiculous numbers for a CB let alone a teenager, and while you wouldn't expect him to score 7 in the premier league he clear will score plenty and could end up on something like 5 by GW38, plus he's top for defcons. Potential long term pick.

Konsa had a fantastic full debut vs Chelsea. He was 1st for duels won, passing accuracy, recoveries, tackles, clearances. Hit defcon as well. He's one of the most obvious picks in the game for 4.4m, Mosquera wasn't even in the squad and I wouldn't be surprised if that's it now - Konsa starts every game until Saliba's return in RCB, Mosquera gets cups.

Van Hecke earned himself 2 bonus points in the 0-0 draw vs Forest, don't sleep on him as a pick, defcons aren't bad, he's got a goal involvement in him, De Zerbi loves him and the fixtures are good long term. I like him more than Porro for 0.6m cheaper. Palace's next 4 are nice, if Disasi can cement a spot in the team he could be handy for 4.5m, played the 90 in their win over Fulham last gameweek, Riad is out long term injured.

Not on the table this week but Thiaw and Hall are great long term picks as well, Leeds away which isn't the perfect entry point but then Hull home, Coventry away, Villa home, Palace away, Everton home, Fulham away. I really like when a defender has a stretch like that where you can look at it and think I'm fine for the next 7 gameweeks playing them every week, and then combine that with an Arsenal defender or two and you've locked up some spots in your team which is important, those won't be areas you have to address with a free transfer, and that should always be the aim, make transfers as infrequently as possible because there will be times when your hand is forced due to injury or whatever.
